Don and Keith used to always
pick on Ken. Sometimes I would let them go but when they
went too far, I would stop it and they would say, "Oh
you always take Ken’s side."
Sometimes Bob would lay
down after lunch to help put Ken to sleep for his nap.
After a while, Ken would come out of the bedroom and say
that he put Daddy to sleep.
When Ken
was small, about 5 or 6 years old, I was working in the
garden and he was outside running around. He went inside
and a few minutes later I went in to see what he was up
to. My purse was hanging on the wall and Ken had climbed
up on the sewing machine to get it down. He was eating
ex-lax from my purse. I could not tell how many he had
eaten so I phoned the doctor right away and he told me
to stick my finger down his throat to make him vomit. He
was okay then.

We were at Arline’s second
wedding and Nancy told us that she was getting a new
Daddy. So Ken said he wanted a new Daddy too. I asked
him who he thought he would like for a Daddy. I
mentioned several names but he didn’t like any of them.
I said that when he found someone he liked to let me
know.

When the lads were young
(early 60's), I worked for the summers at the Ottawa
Boys Camp at Mink Lake. I went to work at 6:00 a.m. and
didn’t get home until 8:00 at night. I would leave a
to-do list for the boys each day: dishes, cooking,
gardening, etc. I had to make a list or they would argue
over who did what.
There were about 200 boys
from Ottawa, mostly from poor families. They spent 2
weeks there and then a new group would arrive. Pete, one
of the workers would come into the kitchen to help us
lift the heavy pots. The kids would sometimes show up at
the kitchen door to say hello or to show us stuff that
they had done. One time, one of the kids brought a snake
to the door. Pete told him to take it away because the
cook was afraid of snakes, and if she went home, there
would be no dinner. The kid got rid of the snake in a
hurry. If there were any leftovers, Mrs. McCann would
give them to me to take home for the boys.
